Detroit tourism combines major sporting events, convention business, cultural attractions, cruise activity, and destination marketing. Visit Detroit reported 19 million visitors to the region in 2024, more than $1 billion in lodging revenue, and $213.6 million in economic impact from the 2024 NFL Draft. The organization’s later reporting also tracks web discovery, international campaigns, booked room nights, and visitor development through 2025.

Detroit tourism at a glance
Visit Detroit’s 2025 Annual Report provides a broad view of activity measured in 2024. It reported 19 million visitors to the region and more than $1 billion in lodging revenue. The report also recorded 1,285 leads, 88 completed site visits, and 196,111 booked room nights in 2024. These are different measures: visitors describe regional arrival volume, lodging revenue describes accommodation spending, and booked room nights describe group and event demand.
The report connected Detroit tourism with sports, meetings, culture, and community programs. PCMA edUcon welcomed more than 1,000 convention planners to Detroit, while the Society of American Travel Writers annual conference was expected to welcome more than 250 attendees in 2025. Visit Detroit also said that 2025’s annual report covered a 129-year legacy of bringing visitors to the region.
The following figures summarize selected measures from Visit Detroit’s reporting. They should not be added together because they cover different activities, dates, and definitions.

Major events and visitor spending
The 2024 NFL Draft was one of the largest individual tourism events in the reported figures. Visit Detroit said the draft drew more than 775,000 fans to Detroit and generated $213.6 million in total economic impact. It separately reported $213 million in total spending from the event and $12.3 million in fiscal and tax impact from visitor spending in its 2024 NFL Draft release. These amounts use different labels and should be read as separate reported measures rather than combined totals.
The event also extended beyond on-site attendance. Visit Detroit said the 2024 NFL Draft reached more than 50 million television viewers worldwide. The 2025 Annual Report also described the event as exceeding 50 million worldwide television viewers. The repeated figure indicates the scale of the draft’s broadcast exposure, while the fan count describes physical attendance in Detroit.
College basketball and youth tournaments added other forms of visitor activity. Visit Detroit said the 2024 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Midwest Regional drew more than 37,000 fans and contributed $15 million to the local economy. Two large-scale AAU volleyball tournaments used more than 80 courts and attracted 35,000 attendees. Three national youth bowling tournaments brought approximately 5,000 participants to the region.
Community and professional events also appear in the tourism organization’s activity measures. Visit Detroit said 115 scholars were welcomed for ASAE’s Diversity Executive Leadership Program. Its annual ROSE Awards celebrated 133 nominees in 2024 and 148 nominees in 2025. The Detroit Sports Commission’s Girls Sports Sampling Clinic welcomed more than 100 girls in grades 3 through 8, while the commission’s Living Legacy Initiative had reinvested more than $1.7 million into local communities since 2024.
Hotels, meetings, and convention demand
Hotel demand is a central indicator in Detroit’s group-tourism pipeline. Visit Detroit reported 196,111 room nights booked in 2024 and 185,000 booked in 2025. The figures are annual totals from separate reports, so they should not be treated as a like-for-like estimate of hotel occupancy or as a measure of every room sold in the region.
| Group and convention measure | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Leads generated | 1,285 | 1,250 |
| Site visits completed | 88 | 83 |
| Booked room nights | 196,111 | 185,000 |

Visit Detroit said 101 groups were serviced in 2025 and 12 citywide events were secured for 2026 through 2029. The organization also attended more than 50 trade shows, events, and conferences in 2025. Those figures describe destination-sales activity and future pipeline development, not completed visitor trips.
The partner network expanded during the same reporting period. Visit Detroit said 91 new partners joined in 2025, the organization had more than 1,100 total partners, and its partner retention rate was 92.13%. A separate Visit Detroit press release said the organization represented more than 900 businesses in membership as of 2026. Because the reports use different dates and membership descriptions, the figures are best kept distinct.
Hotel development was also part of the forward-looking outlook. Visit Detroit said its 2026 Partner & Marketing Outlook event featured plans for 600 hotel rooms in downtown Detroit. More than 500 partners, business leaders, guests, and colleagues attended that event.
Culture, attractions, and visitor experience
Detroit’s tourism profile includes museums, architecture, educational institutions, and downtown destinations. Visit Detroit said the Michelin Green Guide made Detroit one of only 10 U.S. cities to receive the guide. It also said five Detroit landmarks received the guide’s highest three-star rating: Cranbrook Educational Community, the Detroit Institute of Arts, Downtown Detroit, the Guardian Building, and The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation.
The five-landmark figure is a recognition measure, not a count of all Detroit attractions. It identifies the places Visit Detroit associated with the guide’s top rating in its annual report. For readers interested in design and creative work, the list spans a cultural institution, an educational community, a civic district, a historic building, and a museum of American innovation.
Destination organizations also measure whether marketing changes perceptions. Visit Detroit said its AFAR 2025 campaign received nearly 90,000 page views, which was 156% higher than AFAR’s benchmark. It also reported that 68% of surveyed readers had a more positive opinion of Detroit after seeing the ads. These figures describe one campaign and its survey audience, not all visitors to the city.
Digital reach and destination marketing
Visit Detroit’s 2026 Annual Report reported 139 million marketing views in 2025, up 14%, and more than 103,000 new followers, up 3%. Website and social media highlights included more than 4 million views. The organization reported 1,738,870 total web users, with 98% identified as first-time users and 63% located out of state.
The site also sent 18 million web referrals to member organizations in 2025. AI sources generated 13,000 views, while the total social audience reached 681,847 followers. These metrics describe digital discovery and referrals rather than confirmed physical visits. In particular, a web user, a referral, and a follower are not interchangeable units.
Visit Detroit said 13 strategic collaborations generated nearly 3 million impressions across Instagram, YouTube, and blog platforms in the earlier annual report. It said a Burnley FC collaboration drove a 17% increase in interest in the United Kingdom and Ireland markets. Those measures show how the organization connected destination promotion with audience growth and market interest.
The 2025 communications program was reported at 2.2 billion total impressions, including 557 million international impressions. The same report listed 893 local news impressions and 535 Juventus partnership impressions. Because those two smaller figures are presented as the report’s labeled totals, they should be retained as reported rather than recalculated or interpreted as shares of the larger total.
International partnerships and media impact
The Juventus partnership was one of Visit Detroit’s largest reported international marketing efforts. Visit Detroit said the partnership reached 560 million fans worldwide and 100 million fans in Europe, while Juventus had 190 million social media followers. The collaboration produced 955 million impressions, 540 million in global reach, and 39 million engagements.
Visit Detroit also reported a 780% increase in Italian users visiting its site after the partnership launched. Awareness of Visit Detroit among Juventus supporters rose from 15% to 48%, and 88% of aware Juventus fans first learned about Visit Detroit through the collaboration. These measures describe the partnership’s audience and surveyed awareness; they do not establish that every person reached became a visitor.
The Burnley partnership generated nearly $2.0 million in advertising value equivalent during the 2024/2025 broadcast season and $574,000 in QI media value, according to Visit Detroit’s 2026 Annual Report. Burnley created 624 posts featuring Visit Detroit, drove 33 million impressions and 1.4 million engagements, and generated a $231,500 post valuation. The “Take Me to Turf” activation drew 10,000 entries.
Other international activity included eight leading German travel influencers generating more than 4.7 million impressions. Visit Detroit said 125 travel representatives and international media were hosted in 2025. Together, the figures show a destination-marketing strategy that used sports, social content, travel trade, and earned media to reach audiences outside Michigan.
Cruises, tours, and travel trade
Cruise and itinerary development broadened the ways visitors can encounter Detroit. Visit Detroit said Great Lakes cruise activity brought 15,133 passenger visits in 2025 and Detroit recorded 70 cruise stops. It also said more than 100 tour itineraries included Detroit in 2025.
The tourism team generated $5,283,782 in U.S. economic impact in 2025, according to Visit Detroit’s 2026 Annual Report. The report also recorded 1,250 leads and 83 completed site visits, more than 50 trade shows, events, and conferences attended, and 185,000 booked room nights. These sales and travel-trade measures help explain how future group business and leisure itineraries are developed, but they are not a substitute for a visitor survey or a citywide spending estimate.
The reported cruise, tour, and international figures point to a broad destination mix: 15,133 passenger visits from Great Lakes cruising, more than 100 itineraries, 125 hosted travel representatives and international media, and more than 4.7 million impressions from German influencers. For Detroit’s design and creative economy, that mix places cultural destinations and the wider visitor experience inside a larger network of events, media, hospitality, and travel planning.
